Country Profile: Nigeria
The armed group Boko Haram continues to carry out attacks, leading to hundreds of deaths. Boko Haram, whose name means "Western education is forbidden," has targeted educational facilities in the past as part of its efforts to overthrow government control in northeastern Nigeria. The group has repeatedly assaulted colleges, universities, and education centers, setting fire to dormitories and shooting students as they slept. At least 42 students have been killed while 18 other students have been injured. Reports of extrajudicial executions, enforced disappearances, torture, and mistreatment, leading to deaths in custody in some cases, also continue. Conditions in military detention conditions are harsh, and communal violence occurs across the country.
