On August 29, 2018 Endangered Scholars Worldwide learned that Gokarakonda Naga Saibaba, professor and human rights defender, has been denied medical treatment for the second time in the recent months of his detention.
Gokarakonda Naga Saibaba, 51, is serving a life sentence at the Nagpur Central Jail for his alleged links to Mao. Saibaba was accused of attempting to overthrow the government, but in reality his arrest and sentence were related to his peaceful human rights and political activism.
Saibaba is a wheelchair user. According to reports, his condition has worsened considerably since his arrest in May 2014, and his legs have become completely paralyzed. Despite his medical needs, he has been repeatedly denied medical attention and access to suitable sanitary facilities.
ESW is gravely concerned over reports that Indian officials have habitually Saibaba’s requests for medical aid. India is party to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and a signatory to the UN Convention Against Torture, both of which impose absolute prohibition on torture and other mistreatment. ESW calls upon the Indian government to end the practice of depriving political prisoners of medical care and to grant detainees medical parole in time to properly treat their illnesses.
ESW asks for letters, emails, and faxes respectfully urging Indian authorities to reconsider any convictions related to Gokarakonda Naga Saibaba’s peaceful exercise of free speech and association and to ensure his well-being while in custody in accordance with international human rights standards.
