Rezaul Karim Siddique

In Brief

Rezaul Karim Siddique, a 58-year-old professor of English at Rajshahi University in Northwestern Bangladesh, died on April 23, 2016 when he was attacked by a group armed with machetes while waiting for a bus that would take him to the university. ISIS claimed responsibility for the killing.

Case History

A statement from ISIS accused the deceased professor of "calling to atheism." However, according to CNN, the family has refuted the claim.

Siddique was active in cultural activities and wanted to open a music school in nearby Bagmara village, a hotbed for the banned Islamic militant group, Jamatul Mujahideen Bangladesh. According to Rajshahi police, four professors at the University have been killed since 2004; however, police say that the previous deaths were local crimes and not involved with the Islamic militants.
