Sudan: Killing of Student Evokes Protest in North Darfur

July 13, 2016

People in Birkat Seira in North Darfur demonstrated against the murder of a university student by a militiaman on Tuesday. Demonstrators reportedly torched the military headquarters.

University of Nyala student Fadul Harun Yousif, who studied Engineering, was shot by a member of a paramilitary group in the market in Birkat Seira market in North Darfur. The militiaman opened fire in the market at 3pm on Tuesday. Yousif was shot in the head and killed.

Endangered Scholars Worldwide is deeply concerned about the ongoing violence and targeting students in North Darfur. The ongoing tensions in Sudan have a profoundly unsettling effect on academic freedom and represent a grave threat to higher education on a national scale.
