On September 12, 2018 Endangered Scholars Worldwide transmitted a letter of appeal to the Iranian Government and the US Department of State regarding the ongoing detention, persecution, and conviction of XiYue Wang, a 37-year-old United States citizen of Chinese descent. Wang was sentenced to 10 years in prison while researching Iran's Qajar dynasty for his Princeton University PhD and has been detained since August 2016 by the Islamic Republic of Iran on accusation of “archiving thousands of Iranian documents and having connections to American intelligence agencies.” Over the past two years, his wife, Qu Hua, has stated that her husband attempted suicide during his time in prison.
In the letter of appeal, Endangered Scholars Worldwide deplores and condemns XiYue Wang's ongoing detention, persecution, and conviction and calls upon all international organizations, academic and professional associations, and other groups and individuals devoted to the promotion and defense of human rights to protest this arbitrary incarceration; to call for Wang's immediate and unconditional release; and to urge the officials of the Iranian government to respect, guarantee, and implement the provisions and principles of human rights as specified in international conventions and treaties.
