    Stony Brook Professor Released from Prison in Cameroon

    Stony Brook University professor Patrice Nganang was released from prison in Cameroon by a court decision on December 27, 2017. Nganang, 47, teaches in Stony Brook University's Cultural Studies and Comparative Literature Department in New York. He was taken into custody by Cameroon authorities on December 7 when he tried to leave the country and was then charged with multiple offenses for a Facebook post he wrote that insulted Cameroonian president Paul Biya.     Stony Brook Professor Detained in Cameroon

    According to the Associated Press, a Stony Brook University professor has been detained in Cameroon after the publication of an essay that allegedly criticized President Paul Biya's response to the demonstrations and pleas of the country’s English-speaking minority population for self-determination. Patrice Nganang, 47, who teaches in the university's Cultural Studies and Comparative Literature Department in New York, was taken into custody by authorities on December 7, 2017
