Delhi Sociologist Faces Charges

Updated: Mar 12, 2022

Delhi University professor and rights activist Nandini Sundar and ten others have been summoned for murder charges in the insurgency-hit Sukma district of Chhattisgarh.

Armed Maoists killed Shamnath Baghel late Friday at his home in Nama village in the Tongpal area. Baghel and some of his associates had been organizing a protest against Maoist activities since April 2016.

Sundar, who heads the sociology department at Delhi University, has worked extensively on Maoist insurgency, especially in the Bastar region. Her recent book, The Burning Forest: India’s war in Bastar, takes a close look at the conflict and its consequences for the area and its people.

Endangered Scholars Worldwide stands with Nandini Sundar, who is facing murder charges as a consequence of her activism against the Indian state's abuses of human rights in its war against the Maoists.
